Hourensou is the Japanese word for spinach. This recipe is very simple, but it is my favorite way to enjoy this healthy vegetable. Popeye is a very famous cartoon in Japan. When I was a kid, my mom used to tell me to eat more spinach to be strong like Popeye.
Yield: 2 servings
Time: 5 minutes
Ingredients
- 1 bundle of spinach
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 pinch of katsuobushi
Preparation
- Add spinach leaves to boiling water, and cook for 2 minutes
- Remove, strain, and pat dry on paper towels. Cut into 2″ pieces
- Put cooked spinach on a plate and sprinkle with katsuobushi, then add soy sauce

Ariel, it sounds like Sunomono, which is vinegar salad. Mix vinegar, soy sauce, sugar for the dressing, then add vegetables. Cucumber is the most common vegetable to use.
Hi, I had a japanese friend years ago who made a salad with seaweed and( dried) little fish.I don’t remember any other ingredient but she made it often. Do you know what it could be?
oooo that would be nice! just that little bit of flavour from the katsuobushi! that would def taste like something my Bachan would make!
Hi again!
Katsuobushi is dried bonito flakes. If you can’t find it in a store, you can buy it on here.
